Some of the most common leadership challenges involve motivating and retaining employees. Unmotivated workers aren't the most productive employees. Being unable to keep workers long-term usually adds up to a lot of resources spent on training. Retaining employees usually increases both productivity and profitability for a company, so good leadership is essential. Effective workplace leaders who are strong in team building can often overcome leadership challenges.Leadership experience means having a background in being able to inspire and motivate employees to work productively. Being a supervisor or manager alone doesn't necessarily mean that a person is a good leader. Leadership isn't about giving orders, but rather it relies on how they are given. Leadership coaching, rather than barking out orders, tends to motivate workers into taking the initiative to do the best job they can. Entering a new workplace environment as a leader can be especially challenging. Respect for a supervisor or manager needs to be earned, yet the new leader has to be sure to achieve company goals by delegating and relying on his or her employees. If he or she doesn't begin to achieve the objectives set by upper management within several months, his or her new job could be in jeopardy. In order to overcome such common leadership challenges, supervisors and managers must focus on team building. A cohesive, informed team that is prepared to work together is going to accomplish much more than a weak, unmotivated one. The team leader needs to help his or her staff solve problems through empowerment. Specifically, good supervisors and managers delegate tasks that allow workers to figure out their own solutions to problems that keep them from being an achiever. Solving leadership challenges means that the supervisor or manager steps in when and where he or she is needed. For example, one of the biggest challenges in trying to create a strong workplace team is when an employee is not doing as much in his or her position as others in similar jobs. This can present a problem for the team leader, especially if the employee in question doesn't admit to not applying the maximum effort. If the leader doesn't communicate the problem effectively, the employee won't be motivated to change, and this may affect the other employees in a negative way for the company. In some cases, productive employees may quit while the unproductive employee may stay. Many managers don't like to fire people, but even more challenging can be the legalities of firing for just cause. The company could be sued by the employee if he or she was found by the courts to have been fired unjustly. Therefore, one of the most common leadership challenges is to adequately warn employees about performance issues. All of these communications must be documented. The laws about adequate warnings about firings must be upheld or the business may face a court case.
